Poultry Library

These are books I highly recommend for any poultry library.

Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks by Dave Holderread - A must have book for anyone wanting to raise ducks. Covers everything you need to know from hatch to maturity. Chapters on incubation, health, brooding, and feeding to name a few. Also has descriptions of most breeds, and a great chapter on the basics of duck color genetics. I use mine often as a reference. You can order it directly from Holderread's (541-929-5338), or here's a direct link to it on Amazon.com.

The Book of Geese by Dave Holderread - Another great book from Dave Holderread for everything you need to know about geese. My favorite goose reference book. Covers behavior, incubation guidelines, brooding, adults, health, feeding and even has a chapter on sexing. I like that he sprinkles his own personal experiences throughout the book. Because hey, if it works for him, it will probably work for me! You can order it directly from Holderread's (541-929-5338), or at a good price from Metzer Farms.

Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow - A great reference for raising the home flock. Covers all aspects of raising chickens. Chapters on breeds, acquiring stock, incubation, brooding, adults, feeding, housing, breeding, eggs, and butchering. Also covers the basics of health and disease. A must have for the beginner. Here is a direct link to it on Amazon.com.

The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow - I use this book all the time. It has a GREAT alphabetical listing of diseases and all their symptoms. Also offers information on each disease and diagnosis, transmission, prevention, treatment and even human health risk. This book also covers parasites, proper incubation procedures, nutrition, tips on protection from predators and safe housing. I highly recommend it! Here is a direct link to it on Amazon.com.

A Guide to Better Hatching by Janet Stromberg - A quick reference that I keep near my incubator. Covers everything you need to know about the egg, and then about incubating it! Has chapters on structure, formation and fertility of the egg. Also, incubator sanitation, artificial insemination, incubation trouble shooting and a hatching timetable. Great little book. You can get it for a good price through Metzer Farms.
